I don't see Carvin as ripping off anyone's designs any more than the majority of manufacturers. Regarding the quality I defer to those who've owned them and most find the quality excellent, though many complain about the electronics (and I understand they've improved that in recent years). Not that I've had experience with the guitars themselves. Sorry but I can't really agree with this at all.
